North Carolina Incentives
Duke Energy Solar Rebate Program
The Duke Energy company offers its exclusive North Carolina Solar Rebate Program to its residential, commercial and nonprofit customers. Homeowners get a $0.40-per-watt rebate for systems up to 10 kilowatts. You can get a different rate per watt depending on your role:
Residential customers: Expect to get $0.40 per watt. An average 8-kilowatt (kW) system can be eligible for a rebate of $3,200.
Commercial customers: Expect to receive $0.30 per watt, up to a rebate of $30,000.
Nonprofit customers: Up to $0.75 per watt is possible, or a rebate of up to $75,000.
The eligibility requirements include being a Duke Energy customer in North Carolina and owning the property where the solar arrays will be installed and used. You must also be the account holder on the company’s concurrent electric retail rate. However, it can be hard to enroll because of the waitlist.
Low-Interest Loans for Solar Panel Installation
Agricultural producers and rural small businesses can receive guaranteed loan financing and grant funding from the Department of Agriculture. The loan covers the installation or improvement of renewable energy systems.
In North Carolina, agricultural producers and small businesses can opt for these loans. The funds are destined to purchase and install small and large solar generation systems. The loan guarantees up to 75% of the total eligible project costs.
For more information, visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
State Property Tax Exemption
The North Carolina Department of Revenue addressed the taxability and assessment of Solar Energy Electric Systems. This incentive stays that photovoltaic systems may or may not be taxable, depending on their ownership and use. Systems owned by individuals that are not used to produce income, or have a connection with a business, are not taxable. However, systems installed in a company’s premises are considered business property and taxable. For more information, visit the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
